What is an X-ray?
X-ray is the most common form of medical imaging.
An x-ray (radiograph) is a special image that uses radiation to create pictures of bones and other internal tissues such as your lungs and bowel.
Why would you have an X-ray?
There are several reasons why your doctor may have referred you for an x-ray. These reasons include:
- Broken or fractured bones
- Diagnosis of arthritis in the joints
- Diagnosis of chest and lung conditions such as pneumonia.
Things to know
There is radiation involved in an X-ray – but we use low-dose radiation software throughout all our imaging procedures.
In order to receive an X-ray you will need a referral from a medical practitioner.
We accept referrals from General Practitioners, Specialists, Dentists, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Podiatrists and Osteopaths.
Your X-ray will be conducted by an experienced Radiographer.
How should I prepare?
At Fraser Coast Radiology you do not need an appointment for an X-ray, however, an appointment will ensure that your study can be performed at a time suitable to you
There is no preparation required for an X-ray.
The scan is not performed in an enclosed environment, but on an open bed, so you won’t need to worry about confined spaces.
While it’s not essential, it’s helpful to wear lose fitting clothing without metal buckles, fasteners, or zips. In some cases, you may be asked to change into a gown.
If you are pregnant, you can still have an X-ray, however your referring practitioner will discuss this with you.
How long does an X-ray take?
An x-ray will only take a few minutes for each body part. When the test is over, it may be necessary for you to wait while the images are reviewed by the Radiologist, to see if any further images are required.
When do I get my results?
The results of your X-ray will be sent directly to your referring Doctor and we encourage you to book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.
How much will an X-ray cost?
Our Customer Service Team will be able to advise you of all costs involved with your x-ray including any out of pocket cost (if relevant).
